Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways), or NS, is the principal passenger railway operating company in the Netherlands. Its trains operate over the tracks of the Dutch national rail infrastructure company ProRail, which was split off from NS in 2003.
The Dutch railway system is said to be the most crowded network in Europe. In fact, the Dutch railway system is said to be the 3rd most crowded network in the world. The NS therefore announced that all railway traffic will be rerouted in a more efficient way starting in December 2006 to prevent the network from becoming dangerously overcrowded and to increase punctuality.

It has bus and/or rail operations in Denmark, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Connexxion is the largest public transport bus company in the Netherlands, operating in the west, middle, east and far northern part of the country. It was formed in 1999 as result of a fusion between the public transport companies NZH, ZWN, Midnet and Oostnet. Its name is a mutation of the French word 'connexion' meaning "connection", and may also have been inspired by that of the French-based multinational transport company Connex. Connexxion also owns the bus companies Hermes, Novio and GVU.
